Carlsen, the Lady Hilltoppers’ junior striker, made soccer life miserable for the Lady Indians with a hat trick, and Science Hill finished with an 8-1 win Tuesday night at Tipton Stadium.
The Lady Hilltoppers (5-0, 4-0 District 1-AAA) are ranked No. 5 in the state.
THE FIRST GOAL
After 36 scoreless minutes, Carlsen crushed the Lady Indians’ spirits with a goal from 15 yards out at a tough angle. She hooked the shot just inside the upper right corner of the crossbar.
“I meant for it to be a shot,” Carlsen said. “But from out there, it’s a chance whether it will go in or not, so it was lucky. But I did mean for it to happen.”
Science Hill coach David Strickland said Carlsen’s goal was special, and it wounded D-B (1-2-1, 1-2).
“I think it broke their spirit more than it loosened us up,” Strickland noted. “We had the ball a whole lot, but we weren’t getting the end product. When you score a goal like that, you get a big shot of adrenaline, and when a goal is scored on you, it takes adrenaline out of you.”
Lady Indians coach Blake Rutherford agreed the difficult shot hurt his battling team.
“It was a great hit,” said Rutherford. “I don’t think it could be duplicated again if we did 99 balls that way. Great shot. And it just kind of set the tone.”
Science Hill kept D-B away from the danger zone for nearly the entire contest.
Center defender Sarah Luna said it was a matter of doing the right things in the back end.
“We really stayed compact in the back,” Luna said. “We didn’t let D-B turn with the ball and dribble at us.”
Two minutes after Carlsen’s net connection, Sophia Youngman got into the mix with a goal to give the Lady Hilltoppers a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Science Hill struck early in the second half after Carlsen collected the ball on a breakaway. She had a one-on-one with the D-B goalkeeper, and a tap from right to left rolled into the net for a 3-0 lead.
Carlsen struck again a few minutes later, and Savannah Fields added to the Lady Indians’ long night not long after Carlsen’s third score.
D-B broke up the shutout with a goal in the 68th minute by Brantley Coggins.
Science Hill responded less than a minute later when Youngman knocked another one home.
Teagan Kersey and Riley Cox capped things off for the Lady Hilltoppers with their late scores.
This season, Science Hill has outscored its opponents by a margin of 29-2.
